A mom who thought her son wanted to meet Santa Claus at the mall found out that... things are not always as they seem.

Kerry Spencer had taught her children sign language from a young age, before they could speak, so they could communicate.

But she never expected that her one-year-old son, Samuel, would use his skills to send an SOS signal while sitting on Santa's lap.

Terrified, the toddler resorted to using the infant version of ASL to sign "Help" to his mom while the photographer at the Provo Town Centre Mall in Provo, Utah took a picture.

The story... behind the photo

"I was standing off to the side when the photo was taken and I didn't actually see that he was signing for help until I saw the photo," the mother said.

"Poor he didn't love Santa very much, never really. So we didn't try to get him to go back after that," she added."

For several years, Kerry has posted Sammy's hilarious photo on Facebook.

"We're all laughing at the photo now. His face is one of our favorite family Christmas pictures," she concluded.
