As the young Canadian woman's car plunged into the icy waters of Ottawa, she pulled out her cell phone, raised on the back windshield and posed for a selfie.
The snapshot was captured by local residents, according to the New York Post, with many social media users marveling at the young driver's insensitivity.
Over the weekend, polar temperatures that hit the region turned the Rideau River into an ice rink. And when passersby saw a car speeding across the river's "ice rink" and shortly afterwards stop and begin to sink, they couldn't believe their eyes: The driver of the car had climbed onto the roof of the vehicle to save herself and also to take a selfie.

As if nothing was wrong, he posed for the camera ignoring the danger of the situation.

The unidentified woman in the red coat emerged unharmed and her car was lost in the icy waters at 4:30 p.m. Sunday afternoon.
"She's over the car," a concerned resident says in a video taken from the spot where her vehicle was sinking as two men were preparing to help her by sending her kayak
In another video, the woman is already in the kayak as a man pulls her out into the shallows. Then a man says to her: "Don't go towards the car, please come closer" with the girl showing that she doesn't realize what exactly happened.
"We were on the Rideau River when the car sank into the river. I was shocked at how fast it was sinking...!" tweeted Julie Bowman.
An ambulance and a police car were rushed to the scene, however, when they arrived, the woman had already been rescued.
Social media users did not sit back watching her recklessness, harshly criticizing the girl
"She captured the moment with a selfie while people rushed to help her and were worried about her," wrote Linda Douglas on Twitter.
According to police, the young woman was charged with reckless driving. Police said the ice where the river broke was thinner. "No ice is safe," the police said.
