The British Royal Navy has confirmed an incident of "contact" between the sonar submarine of a British frigate and a Russian submarine in the North Atlantic Ocean "in late 2020".
The Russian submarine was sailing about 200 miles north of the Scottish coast and the British were concerned about possible sabotage of underwater communications cables.
For this reason the frigate HMS Northumberland was sent to the area, with a Channel 5 television crew on board to film a documentary series on life on warships.
In an incident described as a "one in a million chance" the British frigate was directly over the Russian submarine the crew began sinking the submarine's echolocation system submarine cable.
The cable with the expensive sound sensors struck the submarine and dragged on the surface, causing severe damage that forced the frigate to return to its base for repairs.
The moment of impact was recorded by the TV crew, with the panic of the crew evident when the ship's alarm began to sound. A crew member can be heard saying "what the f... is that?" and "what did I just hit, f...?"
