"They have "flayed" the Chief of the Fire Brigade in Greece According to the decision of the KYSEA, Stefanos Kolokouris is demobilized

One of the changes decided by the KYSEA today is the demobilization of the Chief of the Fire Department, Stefanos Kolokouris. His position will be taken over by Lieutenant General P.S. Alexios Rapanos.

Stefanos Kolokouris had joined the Corps in 1991 and became Chief of the Fire Brigade in February 2020. Until then, Mr. Kolokouris was Deputy Chief of Operations of the Fire Brigade Lieutenant General of the Fire Brigade. He had succeeded Vassilis Matthaiopoulos.

The selection of Matthaiopoulos by the previous SYRIZA government to the position of Chief had raised questions inside and outside the Corps. It is recalled that he was appointed Chief in August 2018, replacing the then Chief Sotiris Terzoudis.

Note that Kolokouris and Matthaiopoulos had an active role during the operations in the deadly and catastrophic fire in Mati. In fact, both were found to be under investigation by the prosecutor for their management of the tragedy.

The letter of the victims' families to Mitsotakis

We should also recall that in a letter to Kyriakos Mitsotakis, which they had communicated to the Ministers of Civil Protection and Justice, among others, the relatives of the victims, burn victims and residents of the affected areas in Mati, had asked for the dismissal of Stefanos Kolokouris from mid-2021.

The signatories of the letter criticized the now former Chief of the Fire Brigade for what he claimed in the supplementary memorandum he submitted to the investigator for Mati.

It should be noted that Mr. Kalokouris was the commander of EMAK on 23 July 2018.

Specifically, the relatives of the victims accused Mr. Kolokouris of choosing to support the "unbelievable hypothetical scenario", as they described it, "that even if he had gone to the area in time, he could not have prevented the unimaginable number of dead and injured people, because the times when the victims lost their lives, or, caused the injuries are not mentioned".

They called Mr. Kolokouris, and also accused him that "with his total absence, he left us burning, literally, helpless", noting that "only someone without a shred of conscience does not realize that his role - if he was here - would have been extremely important in the help that the EMAK rescuers could offer to the people who were left to die in the streets".

"It becomes clear," the relatives added, "that Mr Kolokouri's defensive tactics go beyond the bounds of a suspect, and constitute an insult to our dead and an abuse of one's right to prove one's innocence."

The letter. In Attica, but also in Evia. At the time, the accusations against the fire brigade were that it left Evia helpless until the fires in Attica were brought under partial control, with the result that the fires in Evia reached from one end to the other of the island and destroyed everything.
