Four more persons, alleged by witnesses to have been involved in the clashes between Syrian residents of Paphos in Paphos on 3 January, were arrested by the police yesterday and brought before the Paphos Court today, with a request for their further detention to clarify the cases.

The two of them are alleged to have participated in the respective clashes in Chloraka the following day, i.e. on January 4. Two people of Syrian origin appear to have been seriously injured in the Pafos incident[/B], one suffered a left rib fracture and a pneumothorax, was operated on and kept for hospitalisation, while the second suffered two fractures in his left arm from a fall from the window of his apartment, was fitted with a splint and was also kept for hospitalisation. The condition of both of them is considered serious.

The investigator of the case Sergeant D. Agiosilaou of the Paphos CID reported to the Court all the details known to the police that came from eyewitnesses of the incident. He said that 10 arrest warrants had already been issued for persons, some of whom are still wanted, that the injuries resulted from the first incident in Paphos, that during the second incident in Chloraka there were about 150 people of Arab origin in the courtyard of an apartment complex where they clashed with sticks and other objects. However, the reason for the clashes was not specified. Further searches will be carried out at the suspects' homes, reconnaissance parties will be conducted and other persons are being sought, he added.

The defence lawyer for the four suspects, criminal lawyer Dr Artemis Savvidou did not object to the police's requests for detention of the suspects nor to the duration of detention for 6 days, stating that the suspects are at the disposal of the police to determine whether or not they were ultimately involved in the clashes. The prosecution was represented by Ms Chryso Perganti.

The Court, presided over by Mr George Vlami, issued a detention order for the suspects for 6 days in order to complete the police investigations, stating that it weighed the public interest on the one hand and the suspects' right to liberty on the other and that the conditions for issuing the detention orders were met.
