There was no damage after the earthquake, but the Prefect calls for a structural adequacy check
No damage was reported after the new earthquake in Paphos province, except for a report to Emba of cracks, which will be assessed, said Paphos Prefect Mary Lambrou. She noted, however, that the Paphos District Administration advises owners of old buildings to have the structural adequacy of the buildings checked by qualified engineers in case there are any problems dating back to the past.
In statements to reporters, Ms. Lambrou said that since 2012 , "Eurocodes are applied and we check and the supervising engineers are responsible to check the seismicity of new buildings", noting that "conditions are imposed.
She also added that there are areas with some soil problems identified by the Department of Geological Survey and there are requested with the building permit geological and geotechnical studies. So, as she explained, the safeguards are in place for the most recent constructions.
Referring to the new seismic activity, Mrs Lambrou said that it is known that yesterday's earthquake occurred a few minutes after 23:00 and was of 5.1 on the Richter scale, adding that it was felt in the entire Paphos District.
The epicentre, he continued, was in the same area as the previous earthquakes, namely 53 kilometres northwest of Polis Chrysochous, in the sea area.
As of the same time yesterday, he continued, "we have been in contact with the Civil Defence at their headquarters no damage has been reported."
He pointed out, however, that this morning they had a report of a case in Emba of cracks. Of course, he said, in such cases there seems to be pre-existing problems, there was nothing generalized.
He also announced that this reported case will be visited by the technical services for evaluation.
It is known, he said, that on 11/1/22 there was a stronger earthquake of 6.5 on the Richter scale. On 1/28/22 4.5 Richter, noting that there is a seismic activity that the Department of Geological Survey is responsible to evaluate. But it seems to be some aftershocks, he concluded.
