Views and best practices on cooperation between states in addressing crimes affecting the environment, including overexploitation of natural resources, dumping of harmful sewage into the sea and corruption, were exchanged by participants at the session of the Commission on Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice of the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime Control (UNODC).

In the web discussion on "Strengthening international cooperation to address crimes affecting the environment", in the framework of the 3-day session, Cyprus was represented by MP Haralambos Theopeptou, member of the Cypriot delegation to the Mediterranean Parliamentary Assembly (MPA).

An announcement of the Parliament states that in his intervention, Mr. Theopeptou referred to the work and actions of the CMC to strengthen international cooperation in this field, as well as to the contribution of the Assembly in highlighting the issue through the adoption of Resolutions and Declarations denouncing bad practices and calling on parliaments to work for the accession of the member states of the CMC to the intergovernmental conventions on the protection of the environment and the prevention of organised crime and to ensure their implementation.

He added that the CMC has developed partnerships with international bodies and think tanks from academia and is placing particular emphasis on updating the Palermo Convention against Transnational Organized Crime to include a legal framework to combat environmental crimes.
