The UN Security Council discusses the situation in Cyprus
The UN Security Council will discuss the current state of affairs regarding the Cyprus problem, in the context of its deliberations this afternoon (New York time) before the body, on the renewal of the mandate of the United Nations Peacekeeping Force in Cyprus (UNFICYP) for another six months. The adoption of the resolution on the renewal of UNFICYP's mandate is scheduled for the morning of 27 January.
Specifically, the Security Council will today discuss the reports of UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres on his Good Offices Mission and UNFICYP that were tabled before it in early January.
In his report on UNFICYP, Mr Guterres recommends renewing the mandate of the peacekeeping force for another six months, i.e. until 31 July 2022. Noting that the last six months have seen a further deepening of mistrust between the sides and the two communities, he encouraged the leaders and their representatives to maintain dialogue with each other, expressed concern about the lack of communication between the two communities and urged the leaders to encourage more direct contact and cooperation between them
The passage of time continues to complicate efforts to find a mutually acceptable solution in Cyprus, he said. Guterres, in his Good Offices Mission report on developments in the Cyprus problem from 19 June 2021 to 15 December 2021.
"I note with concern that, during this recent period, the positions of the communities seem to have become further entrenched and more divided," said the head of the international organization, who noted that he continues to be guided by relevant Security Council resolutions that have established UN parameters.
The Government Spokesman, Marios Pelicanos, had told the CBC that it is regrettable that the UN Secretary General keeps equal distances in his reports We see that equal distances are kept in the reports, possibly in an attempt by the Secretary General to keep the window open so that the effort to resume the dialogue can continue, he noted.
