The problems of mountainous areas are being tackled at their root, says K. Hambiaouris The account of the onslaught of "Elbis"
The problems that frost and snowfall have caused in mountain communities are being tackled at their root, Commissioner for Mountain Community Development Costas Hambiaouris told the Cyprus News Agency.
Hampiouris, who was responding to questions from the Cyprus News Agency on the situation in mountainous areas, said that the main problems facing mountain communities are due to frost and slippery roads. He also noted the fact that some water pipes, tanks and solar water heaters have broken, resulting in the interruption of water supply to some houses. In some areas there has been a power outage, Hampiouris said.
The Commissioner for Mountain Community Development said that "in coordination, the Electricity Authority, the Provincial Administration, the community authorities, the Commissioner's Office have been doing their best and supporting the residents to overcome in the best possible way the problems that are being experienced."
In addition, Mr. Hambiaouris also referred to the one-time emergency assistance to be paid to the affected communities, which is a "personal decision of the President himself". In this way, President Anastasiades is actively demonstrating his determination to support the mountain communities, he added. In view of the frost and the increase in oil prices globally, he said, the President, listening to the concerns of the residents, took the initiative and asked the Ministers of Finance and Interior to take a proposal for the one-time emergency assistance to the Cabinet meeting on Wednesday.
The Commissioner for Mountain Community Development assured that the problems of mountain communities "are being addressed at the root", adding that as soon as a problem or need arises, there is coordination Residents of mountain communities are familiar with these problems because they occur every year due to snowfall and frost, he noted. Apart from the magnificent views that Troodos gives us, there are also safety issues and everyone should be careful and obey the instructions of the Police and Civil Defence to avoid unpleasant situations, he concluded.
