President Anastasiades participated on Tuesday in a teleconference in preparation for the upcoming European Council Summit to be held in Brussels on Thursday 16 December.

According to a written statement by Deputy Government Spokesperson Niobe Parisinou, the teleconference, which was convened by Council President Charles Michel, was also attended by Finnish Prime Minister Shana Marin, Belgian Prime Minister Alexander de Crewe, Croatian Prime Minister Andrej Plenković, Lithuanian President Gitan Naousenda and Czech Prime Minister Andrej Babiš.

The leaders attending the meeting exchanged views and presented their positions on the issues on the agenda, including pandemic management, migration, rising energy prices, security and defence issues, EU resilience in crisis management, external relations (Belarus, Ukraine, African Union Summit, Ethiopia) and the economic situation in the euro area in the light of the pandemic.

In his own intervention, President Anastasiades focused on the migration issue, stressing that Cyprus is facing a disproportionate burden due to the greatly increased migration flows, and added that the largest percentage of asylum seekers are persons who are systematically and in an organised manner pushed by Turkey towards the free areas through the occupied territories, according to the statement, citing figures.

He also reiterated the call for tangible and concrete assistance to Cyprus, both from the EU itself and its partners.
