Written statement by Government Spokesman Marios Pelekanos on the meeting of the President of the Republic with the President of the European Council

The President of the Republic Mr Nicos Anastasiades, who is in Brest, had a working meeting with the President of the European Council Mr Charles Michel.

During the meeting, President Anastasiades briefed Mr Michel on the efforts being made[/B] to break the deadlock and restart the Cyprus settlement process,[/B] expressing at the same time his disappointment at the continued refusal of the Turkish side to accept the appointment of the UN Secretary General's envoy.

The President of the Republic also referred to his proposals for the adoption of a substantial package of Confidence Building Measures aimed, on the one hand, at fostering a positive climate to facilitate the preparation of the ground for the resumption of negotiations on the Cyprus problem within the framework of agreed UN parameters and, on the other hand, on the other hand, an end to Turkish illegal actions on land and sea which are harmful to Cyprus and its people, Greek Cypriots and Turkish Cypriots, to the wider region and to the European Union itself.

President Anastasiades called for the assistance of the European Union to promote and implement the specific Confidence Building Measures, which, he said, are also supported by Turkish Cypriot organized groups, while encouraging the Union to take initiatives for the resolution of the Cyprus problem, which should certainly be complementary to the UN Secretary General's Good Offices.

Further, and on the occasion of yesterday's unacceptable incident in Deneia, President Anastasiades did not fail to denounce the harassment of Greek Cypriot farmers by Turkish troops in the Dead Zone.

The President of the Republic also expressed disappointment at the ongoing provocative statements by the Turkish government, referring to what the Turkish Foreign Minister said today, who once again rejects the agreed basis for a Cyprus settlement and makes various pretexts on the issue of future revenues from the exploitation of Cypriot gas fields, despite the fact that the rights of the Turkish Cypriot community are fully guaranteed.

The two leaders had the opportunity to exchange views on international developments, including Ukraine and efforts for a diplomatic solution to the "Normandy Shape", developments in Armenia-Azerbaijan relations, etc.a.o.
