The President meets with Macron and Kerry in France, where he will participate in the "One Ocean" Summit

The President of the Republic, Nicos Anastasiades, will participate today in Brest, France, at the "One Ocean" Summit organised by the French EU Presidency, during which he will have meetings with French President Emmanuel Macron and the US President's Envoy for Climate Change, John Kerry.

Last night President Anastasiades briefed the President of the European Council, Charles Michel, on efforts to resume the dialogue on the Cyprus problem.

According to the Government Spokesman, Mario Pelican, during the working meeting with the President of the European Council, President Anastasiades informed Mr. Michel on the efforts being made to break the deadlock and resume the Cyprus settlement process, expressing at the same time his disappointment at the continued refusal of the Turkish side to accept the appointment of the UN Secretary General's envoy.

The President of the Republic also referred to his proposals for the adoption of a substantial package of Confidence Building Measures aimed, on the one hand, at cultivating a positive climate to facilitate the preparation of the ground for the resumption of negotiations on the Cyprus problem, within the framework of agreed UN parameters and, on the other hand, to end Turkish illegal actions on land and sea which are harmful to Cyprus and its people, Greek Cypriots and Turkish Cypriots, to the wider region and to the European Union itself.

President Anastasiades, according to the Government Spokesman, requested the assistance of the European Union for the promotion and implementation of the specific Confidence Building Measures, which, he said, are also supported by Turkish Cypriot organized groups, while at the same time, he encouraged the Union to take initiatives for the resolution of the Cyprus problem, which should certainly be complementary to the UN Secretary General's Good Offices.

As part of his participation in the One Ocean Summit, which starts this morning, President Anastasiades will be a speaker at a roundtable discussion on 'An Ocean of Solutions for Climate Change. The theme of the President's speech is tackling climate change with a focus on Green Shipping.

President Macron and a group of leaders of EU member states, other states and international organisations will also take part in the discussion, the Government Spokesman said.

Pelecanos also said that with Mr. Kerry, the President will also discuss at length his initiative to address the consequences of climate change in the Eastern Mediterranean and the Middle East.
