The Paphos District Health Services have identified deficiencies in signage in three establishments

Deficiencies in the labelling of packaged food were found in three establishments in Paphos, as part of inspections according to the Head of the Paphos Municipality Health Services, Christos Christou, adding, however, that the managers of the food businesses are cooperating with the services and no problems were found that they had in the past.

In a statement to the Cyprus News Agency, Mr Christou said that just before the Christmas holidays, the team of health inspectors of the Paphos Municipality dealt urgently with the inspection of food establishments , which are under their jurisdiction. We have, he said, "covered all the premises and what we have identified are minor deficiencies in three specific premises which involved marking of packaged food and in one case we had identified a food product which was not stored in the storage conditions specified by the manufacturer."

According to Mr. Christou, in all three cases, recommendations were made on the spot and the owners of the premises complied immediately , adding that therefore nothing serious has arisen for this year.

He also pointed out that the inspections will continue this week, in view of the New Year's holidays and there will also be confirmatory checks on the premises which were found to have minor deficiencies, in order, he said, to ascertain that there was indeed full compliance.

He added that although the specific owners of the three establishments in the presence of the health inspectors have shown compliance, however, they are obliged and will be monitored for the rest of the days.

Mr. Christou sent that message that the managers of the food establishments are cooperating with the services, they themselves are showing more awareness in this area, they respect their consumers and this is a very encouraging message that is, they are no longer detecting problems that they had in the past, he said.

He also said that consumers should also be aware themselves, buy products from approved suppliers , look on the spot before they buy and read food labels to ascertain that it is indeed what they wish to buy.

In general, Christou continued, they need to see the hygiene conditions in food preparation areas which must be of high standards to be sure that the food they buy has also been stored under the hygiene conditions provided by the food manufacturers , he concluded.
