Update on Teacher Absence Rates in Public Schools Announcement of the Ministry of Education
The Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports and Youth (MSPAN) in response to the request expressed during the Minister's appearance before the Committee on Education and Culture of the House of Representatives yesterday, announces data on teacher absences from public schools.
On Friday 18 February 2022, 1218 teachers (Secondary, Technical, Teachers, Kindergarten, Special Education) were absent from Public Schools.
Of these:
(i) 557 teachers were absent because they are confirmed coronavirus cases
(ii) 101 teachers were absent because they are identified as close contacts of confirmed coronavirus cases.
(iii) 232 teachers were absent to care for children who are confirmed coronavirus cases or have been identified as close contacts of confirmed coronavirus cases and who are under 15 years of age.
(iv) 513 teachers were absent for any other reason/illness.
The Ministry of Education, as stated in its statement, continues its daily efforts to ensure the smooth operation of schools in the midst of a pandemic and to address the need to replace teachers who are absent.
"From the above figures, however, it is clear that a number of teachers could be in school if they made use, either for themselves or their children, of the 'retention test' procedure for contacts," it said.
As part of the dialogue and cooperation that has been developed, the Ministry of Education, it says, is once again appealing to educational organisations to use their influence to ensure that teachers who identify themselves as close contacts or who have children in care at home who are close contacts, use the opportunity provided by the contacts antigen tests to ensure that schools are not burdened with avoidable absences. "In this way, they will also support their colleagues who continue to serve in the school."
The Ministry of Education reiterates that such a contribution from the teachers' organizations themselves will also assist the additional facilities that the Ministry is implementing to facilitate the process of substitutions in schools.
