Defence Minister Charalambos Petridis is travelling to Brest, France, today to take part in the Foreign Affairs Council, in the framework of the French Presidency of the European Union.

An announcement by the Ministry of Defence states that the Ministers of Defence of the Member States will examine the current issues of the Common Defence and Security Policy.

They will attend a working dinner with the NATO Secretary General, the UN Deputy Secretary General for Peacekeeping Operations and the Chair of the European Parliament's Committee on Security and Defence, during which they will discuss the challenges faced by the EU due to the interventions of state and non-state actors in the regions where the Union is operationally engaged.

The following day, the European Space Policy will be discussed and ways to ensure that the Union's security and autonomy with regard to its military capabilities are strengthened.

The meeting will conclude with a joint discussion with Foreign Ministers on the development of the Strategic Compass to guide the EU's common security and defence efforts in the coming years.
