Intensive investigations into the fire that caused the death of a 40-year-old European citizen, who was found dead early Monday morning in the bedroom of a house he was staying in Astromeritis.
The causes of the 40-year-old's death will be examined during the autopsy to be carried out, a spokesman for the police press office told the Cyprus News Agency.
As reported in a previous Cyprus Times report,[/B] according to the police, at around 05:45, information was received about a fire in a vacant building belonging to a construction company in Astromeritis. Members of the police station found that the fire had been extinguished before the arrival of the authorities by the owner, with a fire extinguisher.
A 40-year-old man was found dead in the bedroom. From examinations it appears that the fire started in the kitchen, he added.
According to Fire Service spokesman Andreas Kettis, the Lakatamia station responded with two vehicles to a call at 5:42 a.m. He said that when they arrived the fire had already been extinguished, and they found a small fire.
"Upon investigation we found that there was a person dead inside the room of the house, we informed the police," he said. Kettis told the Cyprus News Agency.
He said there was extensive damage to the living room and kitchen area which was open plan, and that they were assessing some things on the scene. According to assessments, there was a halogen heater that was possibly radiating onto something flammable, Kettis said, while noting that police would extend beyond the tent.
Kettis stressed the importance of taking protective measures. "Doors should be closed when we are at bedtime or when we are away from our premises," he said. He pointed out that the other two rooms in the outbuilding where the door was closed were very little affected by the fire and smoke.
