Συμφωνία ΕΛΚ, Social Democrats and Liberals for majority in the European Parliament "locks in" Metsola's election

The Social Democrats (S&D) and the European People's Party (EPP) and the Liberals (Renew) in the European Parliament have reached an agreement to create a majority by the next elections in 2024, according to a statement.

According to the statement, the three political groups are expected to support the candidacy of first vice-president Roberta Metsola (Malta, EPP), who is expected to succeed the late David Sassoli as president of the European Parliament.

"We have reached an agreement with @EPPGroup and @RenewEurope to secure a stable majority until the 2024 elections," an S&D statement on Twitter reads.

Also, it adds, a "strong institutional representation for S&D MEPs" was agreed.

The political group also announced that there was agreement on a working document setting out the European Parliament's priorities for the next period in the areas of "rule of law, women's rights, social dimension and financial rules."

Metsola is so far the only candidate for the presidency of the three political groups. Alice Bakunke (Sweden, Greens), Kosma Złotowski (Poland, Conservatives and Reformists) and Sira Rego (Spain, Left) are also running for the presidency.
