Warnings for Clean Monday from the Forestry Department

Warnings in view of the excursions of the public in the countryside on Clean Monday, 7 March 2022, the Department of Forests, in order to protect both the natural environment and the excursionists.

As stated in the notice, the public should ensure the cleanliness of the outdoor areas they visit and carry trash in concrete bins, whether they are located at a shorter or longer distance. If left in bags at the site visited by hikers, animals will scatter it everywhere, the Forestry Department points out.

It is emphasized that, lighting a fire anywhere in the outdoors is prohibited, except for the preparation of food within permitted and arranged areas located in organized hiking and camping areas. Lighting a fire within the state forest or within 2 kilometres of its edge is an offence punishable by up to 10 years' imprisonment or a fine of up to €50,000.00 or both penalties combined, the statement added.

It also urges the public not to cut or uproot flowers and shrubs, as several of them are strictly protected and some may be endemic and at risk of extinction.

Finally, because in some areas pine trees are infested by the pine beetle insect, the Forestry Department urges the public to be particularly careful, to avoid sitting under or near infested pine trees and to avoid contact with the insect's caterpillar. Anyone who comes into contact with the insect caterpillar and develops a skin problem should seek medical advice and care.
