Two persons under 24-hour detention for importing counterfeit banknotes
In view of the fact that tomorrow the case of importing counterfeit banknotes is expected to be registered against them, the 27-year-old man and his 24-year-old partner, who were arrested yesterday in Limassol, were placed under 24-hour detention.
The counterfeit notes were detected yesterday by an officer of the Customs Department after checking a package sent from a foreign country at the Limassol Post Office when the 24-year-old woman presented herself to receive it.
Specifically, the customs officer found a bundle of 100 10 euro banknotes inside the postal parcel and members of the Limassol CID, who were called to the scene, found them to be fake, as they bore the same serial number.
The 24-year-old suspect was taken to the Limassol CID offices, where the 27-year-old man, on whose behalf she was acting, was also called and went.
Arrest warrants were issued against them, on the basis of which they were arrested and today they were taken to court, which ordered their 24-hour detention, pending tomorrow's registration of the case concerning the offence of importing counterfeit banknotes.
As the police said in a message, despite the fact that this case is believed to be an isolated one, they urge the public to be careful in their transactions and purchases.
Particular caution is recommended when trading or buying and selling notes of high monetary value, both in euros and foreign currency, and any exchange of currency should be done in licensed institutions.
Further, in case anything suspicious is noticed, the public is urged to contact the Police at the Citizen's Line 1460 or the nearest Police Station.
