The Code of Good Governance of Sports Federations was discussed by KOA-AKEL What was put on the table
The implementation of the Code of Good Governance of Cyprus Sports Federations was the main topic of a meeting held on Friday at the AKEL offices, a delegation of the Cyprus Sports Organisation, led by President Andreas Michaelides, with AKEL Parliamentary Representative George Loukaidis.
According to a statement by the COA, Mr Michaelides said after the meeting that they discussed this issue in the meeting they had with the President of the Republic and are considering the submission of a bill by the Ministry of Education to regulate this Code. The CTO is interested in a clean sport and we are joining forces in this intention together with AKEL, he added, adding that they will meet with all political forces, all parliamentary parties, in order to achieve the passage of the Code.
Loukaides in his own statements said that just last week as AKEL they highlighted in the plenary session of the Parliament the serious problems that exist in the operation of the Federations and for the first time they made a commitment of the fund in the budget of the Organisation, which concerns the operating expenses of the Federations. In order to promote precisely what the Code seeks to do: Addressing phenomena that damage sport," he added.
He said that these are phenomena that are unfortunately chronic and must as a State to address them decisively in an effort to ensure transparency, accountability and addressing phenomena of nepotism, addressing incumbents unfortunately created in Federations, as well as other phenomena that have to do with conflict of interest. He also stated that they had put to the administration of the COA the old well-known AKEL position on the creation of a Unified Sports Legislation. We were pleased to hear that the CTO has also moved forward on this issue and will soon launch a tender to prepare this unified legislation, he added. Finally, Loukaides said, on the occasion of the discussion on the Code, the issue of extending democratization and good governance to the CTO leadership was raised before the CTO leadership also with regard to Gymnastics Clubs. This is an important issue and here we are dealing with closed clubs, where there are phenomena that have no place in the field of sport," he concluded.
According to a statement by the CTO, the meeting was attended by Board Member Christos Neophytou, Director General Mary Papamiliades and Head of Financial Management Vassos Koutsiountas.
On the part of AKEL, MPs Christos Christofides and Christos Christofias, as well as member of the Sports Sector Dora Kyriakou, were also present.
