March 8 is a landmark day for Cyprus as it enters the new phase of dealing with the pandemic and takes the next big step towards normalcy. With a 7-day quarantine and trade-businesses to be separated into four categories based on risk for virus transmission What you need to know

With trade and businesses separated into four categories and citizens asked to act under conditions and with the quarantine for covid-positive people being reduced, Cyprus takes the next big step towards normality on Tuesday 8 March as the epidemiological data shows improvement.

"The steady and evident improvement in epidemiological indicators, the reduction in hospitalisations, the drop in the number of cases and the positivity rate, show that the pandemic containment measures we have implemented have worked. This allows us to keep our promise to relax the measures, based on the recommendations of the Scientific Advisory Committee. The excellent response of citizens so far to the call for vaccination and compliance with the Ministry of Health's protocols give us a shield of protection and a sense of optimism that this whole adventure will soon come to an end," the Health Minister said yesterday, announcing the update plan and the new relaxations.

He noted, however, that there is still a long way to go.

On the basis of the decisions taken by the Cabinet yesterday, establishments and professional activities are divided on the basis of risk as follows:

-from 8 March as virus positive individuals may be released on day 7, provided they secure a negative test (Rapid or PCR). If the result is positive, the procedure may be repeated until negative, or until the 10th day of self-limitation. The decision is retroactive.

From 8 March 2022, such close contacts of a confirmed positive case who have not been isolated from the virus positive person (e.g. parents caring for a minor child, etc.) may, instead of remaining in restriction for 10+7 days, may, after the case is released on day 7, undergo testing (Rapid or PCR) and if they secure a negative result, be released. The decision has retroactive effect.

-from 8 March 2022, the increase of capacity in retail establishments, casinos, gyms.

from 8 March 2022, the increase of the maximum number of people at events including weddings and christenings to 500 people, provided that the area of the venue allows for a ratio of 1.5 square metres per person.

-the lifting of the ban on holding student parades. A special protocol with guidelines will be issued.
