Switzerland adopts European sanctions against Putin's regime for the war in Ukraine

In an unprecedented move, the historically neutral Switzerland decided to adopt European sanctions against Russia.

The historically neutral country announced that the measures taken by the European Union against the Putin regime apply to Switzerland as Bern freezes the assets of Russian oligarchs involved in the invasion of Ukraine. "In view of Russia's ongoing military intervention in Ukraine, the Federal Council took the decision on 28 February to approve the sanctions packages imposed by the EU on Russia," the Swiss government said.

As reported by the New York Times, following a meeting with the Swiss Federal Council, Swiss President Ignazio Cassis said the country would immediately freeze the assets of Russian President Vladimir Putin, Prime Minister Mikhail Mishustin and Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov, as well as the 367 sanctions imposed last week by the European Union.

Earlier today the European Commission said the EU hoped that Switzerland would cooperate with the EU in imposing similar sanctions on Russia and the Kremlin regime.

At the same time, the Commission sent a clear message to the candidate countries, stressing in the clearest possible terms that any state wishing to have close relations, i.e. to join the European Union in the future, must impose European sanctions on Russia.
