The aim is "to strengthen our capabilities in Gotland."

The Swedish government announced yesterday (Wednesday) that it will increase its military spending by about 3 billion Swedish kronor (289 million euros) this year to accelerate the rearmament of its armed forces after Russia's invasion of Ukraine.

The aim is to "strengthen our capabilities in Gotland", the country's largest island, "increase the number" of soldiers, "increase our supplies of fuel and ammunition" and improve the "supply of materials and vehicles", Defence Minister Peter Hultkvist explained, according to Swedish TV networks.

Last week, Stockholm announced its intention to increase its military budget to 2 percent of GDP as soon as possible and that discussions are underway between the government and the opposition to speed up the process.
