Support for TC halal producers, on PDO basis, in the Commission's programme for TCs
Specifically tailored measures to support Turkish Cypriot halloumi producers, support for the Committee of Inquiry on Missing Persons, the bi-communal Technical Committee on Cultural Heritage and technical committees in general, as well as scholarships for young and young TCs are included in the annual action programme for the TC community approved by the Commission on Thursday with a total budget of 30.7 million euros.
As for supporting T/C producers to benefit from the halalumi package, in compliance with EU standards such as the Protected Designation of Origin scheme, support will include improving food safety and hygiene standards, eradicating animal diseases and developing an animal identification and registration system compatible with EU requirements applicable to the whole island.
The programme also includes continued support for green infrastructure and the environment, in line with the priorities of the European Green Deal, the statement said.
"This new package of projects aims to support economic development, reconciliation and confidence-building measures, including substantial assistance for the implementation of the PDO Halloumi/Hellim package adopted in April this year," said Cohesion and Reform Commissioner Elisa Ferreira.
"Despite the current political situation, the programme remains as important as ever and we will continue to support on a firm basis the reunification of the island," she added.
In terms of continued support for confidence-building measures, it is announced that the programme will continue to fund the Committee of Inquiry on Missing Persons and the Technical Committee on Cultural Heritage, as well as the other bi-communal technical committees and civil society as a contribution to additional bi-communal activities and the reunification process.
The programme also funds EU information and communication activities with the Turkish Cypriot community.
