France believes that while it has been agreed by the Member States to have an EU-Turkey dialogue on issues of common interest, the EU should be firm on the country's behaviour in the Eastern Mediterranean and in relation to Cyprus.
As a French government source told reporters on the occasion of the launch of the French Presidency, France has condemned Turkey's actions in the enclosed town of Varosha and did not rule out the possibility of sanctions. He said there is the possibility of sanctions as a working hypothesis.
Member states agreed "that we want to have a discussion on issues such as migration, climate change and issues such as economic relations and trade," but "we need to be firm with Turkey regarding its behaviour in the Eastern Mediterranean and in relation to Cyprus."
