Grant scheme for craftspeople to increase production, says Pilidou

The Ministry of Energy, Trade and Industry is preparing to announce a sponsorship scheme "to provide incentives to craftsmen to increase their production," Energy, Trade and Industry Minister Natasha Pileidou said in her address at the ceremony to hand over the handmade leucarite belts to the new members of the Cyprus Symphony Orchestra.

The Minister said that among other things "we are proceeding to provide model training programmes in three, in the first instance traditional arts, ceramics, weaving and embroidery", adding that "the programmes will be offered by the Ministry of Culture through the Human Development Authority"."We enlisted the University of Cyprus to write the training programmes," she said.Our vision, according to Pileidou, "is the protection, revival, promotion and development of the sector, its extroversion and the creation of new jobs."The Trade Minister also said that the Cyprus Handicrafts Service of the Ministry of Energy, Trade and Industry is working assiduously to preserve Cypriot art and handicraft practices, to promote them and to further develop the sector as an area of economic activity.He said that "Myrna Demetriou Pattihi who has been involved in the revival of our treasure for the past few years" and added that "her suggestion to the Cyprus Handicrafts Service to create handmade leucarite belts to adorn the costumes of the young musicians of the Youth Symphony Orchestra is an initiative to strengthen the efforts we are all making".



Finally, the Minister thanked all the embroiderers for their excellent embroideries and promised them that the Ministry "will do everything possible to support their profession so that young people can join the production process."Source: CNA
