Memorandum of Understanding between Cyprus and Kuwait for the protection and preservation of cultural property
A Memorandum of Understanding was signed today by the Minister of Transport, Communications and Works Mr. Yannis Karousosos, on behalf of the Republic of Cyprus, and the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Kuwait, Sheikh Ahmed Nasser Al-Mohammed Al-Sabah, on behalf of the State of Kuwait, for the Prevention of Theft, Illicit Excavations and Illegal Import, Export or Transfer of Ownership of Cultural Property and Promotion of its Restoration. The signing of the Memorandum took place following decisions of the Council of Ministers, dated 22 November 2018 and 3 January 2022, and on the occasion of the Cuban Minister's official visit to Cyprus today.
Sharing the conviction that illicit excavations and the illegal import, export or transfer of cultural property pose a serious threat to the cultural heritage of humanity, within the framework of their bilateral relations, Cyprus and Kuwait strengthen through the Memorandum their cooperation in the field of preventing the theft of cultural property.
The signing of the Memorandum contributes to the further strengthening of relations between the two countries in the field of cultural heritage and encourages the promotion of a series of actions aimed at fostering a culture of concern for the trafficking of cultural property among the public and stakeholders. By informing and raising public awareness of the dangers arising from the theft and illicit acquisition and trafficking of cultural property, the MoU aims to protect cultural property from looting and trafficking.
The Minister of Transport described today's signing as extremely important for Cyprus, underlining that for the Anastasiades Government the protection of cultural property from illicit activities is a priority.
