The decision to eat the leftovers left by his roommate turned into a nightmare for a young student from Great Britain as doctors were forced to amputate his legs shortly afterwards.

The rare case was brought to light by the New England Journal of Medicine, with the student's name not being released, referred to only as "JC".

He was running a high fever, had 166 heartbeats per minute, and whenhe developed sepsis, doctors proceeded to amputate his lower limbs.

The young student, as reported by the Daily Mirror, ate what was left of the chicken noodles his friend had ordered the night before.

According to the New England Journal of Medicine, the British man had no allergies and had had all his childhood vaccinations, based on the history given to him by doctors.

He rarely consumed alcohol, but smoked two packs of cigarettes a week and marijuana on a daily basis.

"The patient was fine for up to 20 hours prior to hospital admission when he developed diffuse abdominal pain and nausea after eating rice, chicken and what was left of his friend's plate."

British "JC" was working a few hours in a restaurant and had not recently travelled or come into contact with animals or people who were ill.

Abdominal pain and vomiting were followed by chills, generalized weakness, progressive worsening of diffuse myalgias, chest pain, shortness of breath, headache, neck stiffness and blurred vision.

Five hours before admission to the hospital, his skin turned purple and a friend took him to the outpatient clinic for evaluation.

Doctors confirmed that he was suffering from an aggressive bacterial infection causing his kidneys to underperform and his blood to begin to clot.
