Security forces fire on protesters in Khartoum, one policeman killed

Security forces in Khartoum[/B], the capital of Sudan, opened fire on protesters attempting to reach the presidential palace, in another mobilization against the military regime. Police said that one police officer was killed while performing his duties.

According to state television, he was stabbed by a protester.

Huge crowds often descend on streets across the country demanding that politicians take over the government, following the October 25, 2021 coup that ended the agreement between politicians and the military to share power.

Doctors who have joined the protest movement say at least 63 people have been killed, most by live bullets or tear gas fired by security forces. Unlike previous protests, bridges and roads remained open today and there was a smaller police presence after coordinating, organizing committees moved the mobilization from Wednesday to Thursday.

Internet and telephone networks were functioning normally. Some of the protesters wore goggles, masks and gloves to protect themselves from tear gas as they made their way to the presidential palace.

Others were breaking sidewalks to create barricades, according to a witness quoted by Reuters. Many cheered as they heard police officers firing tear gas. After they managed to get within a few hundred meters of the presidential palace, security forces pushed them back, using tear gas and flash bombs.

The witness said injured and unconscious protesters were taken away from the scene on motorbikes. Eyewitnesses told Reuters that in the afternoon security forces began firing on the protesters as they left and headed for a nearby neighborhood. The military leadership claims the coup saved Sudan from chaos and pledged to protect the people's right to demonstrate peacefully.
