Impressive shift by Germans to invest in defence following developments in Ukraine
The creation of a 100 billion euro fund for defence investment following developments in Ukraine was announced by Olaf Scholz in a speech to the Bundestag, amending the 2022 budget.
"We must support Ukraine in its time of need," the German chancellor added at a special session of the Bundestag.
"There was no other possible response to Putin's aggression," he added, referring to the shipment of German weapons to Ukraine.
"Putin chose this war, not the Russian people, so we have to see clearly that this is Putin's war," the chancellor said."
"By invading Ukraine, Putin does not just want to wipe a country off the world map. He is destroying the European security structure that we have had since Helsinki," Solz said: "We are not alone in defending peace."
"The Russian invasion of Ukraine marks a turning point. It threatens our entire post-war order. In this situation, it is our duty to support Ukraine to the best of our ability, to defend ourselves against Vladimir Putin's invading army. Germany stands closely on Ukraine's side," Scholz added.
Recall that on Saturday, the German government announced its decision to provide 1,000 anti-tank weapons and 500 surface-to-air missiles to Ukraine as soon as possible.
