Three aspects of the grim crime that the authorities are trying to decode in order to solve the "puzzle" The role of the sister and the husband are under the microscope The statements from the detention rooms and what they may mean for the case

Going back in time and guided by the substance ketamine, homicide analysts and forensic scientists are trying to solve the mystery of the other two deaths of the Daskalakis family's children. For them, April is a key month. Both last year and in 2019. This is because, three years ago, three years ago, little Malena died under unclear circumstances, but mainly because this time last year, healthy until then, Georgina begins to show convulsions and seizures, apparently from the ketamine that was administered in small amounts to kill her in doses. So merciless, so inhuman, so excruciating...

For many, Roula Pispirigou even unknowingly used people to achieve her goal. It is considered certain that the 33-year-old, in some phases of her sick plan, needed the help of certain individuals and what is being investigated is whether they knew or learned of her morbid actions after the fact. Even her ex-husband Manos Daskalakis seems to be one of the persons who in his naivety believed what Pispirigou was spouting in order to complete what she had been destroying for years in her chaotic and abysmal mind. It is a fact that both on the night of Iris' death a year ago, and on the day that Georgina was transferred for hospitalization at Karamandaneio, she was at her sister's side. Therefore, she has seen things and can provide evidence that will shed light on the investigations. It is considered certain that Manos Daskalakis and Dimitra Pispirigou will cross the threshold of Homicide.

THEMA, through the documents, the investigations of Homicide and the testimonies of doctors and nurses, unfolds the thriller of Patras.

Everything indicates that the fatal mistake of the 33-year-old woman is ketamine. Roula was informed that this substance is easily metabolized by the body and thus leaves no traces. But she fell for it. Because that requires the human body to be alive. Otherwise the substance remains in the dead blood and is easily detected in toxicology tests. As it was.

Ketamine

It was early March when during the toxicology tests at the Athens Forensic Service, it was found that ketamine was found in Georgina's system, in addition to other pharmaceutical substances, part of the heavy treatment the little girl was receiving. Immediately, they turned to the attending physicians and found that the 9-year-old girl, in the two treatments administered to her, there was no such substance, while the check found that in the entire Children's Hospital, there was no medicine that included ketamine. Thus, it is concluded that the solution to the mystery lies in this substance.

Knowing that ketamine causes death in a maximum of 20 minutes, the policemen manage, through the statements of doctors and nurses, to reconstruct the last 60 minutes of Georgina's life in the single room on the 4th floor of the hospital. They find that the last doctor's record is an hour ago and the dozens of statements from nurses in that department show that no one else was with the little girl except her mother. These two pieces of evidence are enough to "break" the preliminary investigation, forward the case file to the prosecutor and issue an arrest warrant against Roula Pispirigou for intentional homicide against her first-born daughter.

Now, homicide analysts are trying to get inside the grim mind of the 33-year-old girl to decode three things: The first, has to do with how she came up with the idea of using ketamine to murder her child. They found that in a police series there is such a murder with this substance, but without giving more details about its supply. It is understood that ketamine is the basis for the manufacture of the hallucinogenic drug Special K, which can be obtained in the city's nightclubs for a few euros. They are investigating whether Pispirigu, who was an obsessive internet user, found the tip to obtain pure ketamine powder or pills a year ago through illegal internet channels. For this, her mobile phone and computers have been confiscated so that they can be turned into folios at the Criminal Investigation Laboratories of the National Police and the police will have all the movements and contacts she made all this time. The third possibility is that he obtained the substance through a pharmaceutical company as ketamine is used in veterinary medicine and in medicine but on a limited level. It is being investigated whether she somehow managed to secretly obtain it from the pharmaceutical warehouse where Manos Daskalakis' father worked or used her ex-husband's job as a driver to transport medicine twice a week, from Patras to Athens and back.

The big mistake that essentially betrayed her is when she learned that ketamine has a special characteristic. It is very easily metabolized in the body and eliminated within a few hours. It is estimated that when on April 11 last year Georgina suffered her first cardiac arrest and finally managed to survive after superhuman efforts of the doctors, Roula Pispirigou poisoned her with a smaller amount of ketamine. It was not detected in the blood tests, confirming in fact what the 33-year-old had learned about the fast metabolism and thus began a frantic barrage of 8 more attempts until it finally managed to "take" her life on January 29. The mistake that essentially betrayed her was the fact that she did not know that ketamine in the dead body cannot be metabolized and remains in the blood. Thus, it was detected in toxicology tests and confirmed a number that is truly shocking: 6.5mg/ml, when just 2.4 mg/ml is enough to murder an adult.

Motive

The next step in the investigations of the Homicide Task Force is to establish the 33-year-old's motive. They believe it is particularly pivotal as if identified it will solve the other two deaths of the children. As they say, the answer to whether the other two little girls were murdered by Roula will be determined by the motive for the murder of Georgina.

They are trying, through the profile they have sketched for Pispirigou, the life she led, the things she said and the testimonies of her acquaintances and friends, to answer this question.

There are three possible possibilities as to why she committed this outrage against the eldest daughter who was left alive.

The first has to do with her obsession with her ex-husband. Possibly she wanted, by hurting her children, to get back at him. But there is a more nightmarish scenario. This, linked to the dates the couple were separated and a coincidence that needs to be investigated. Every time Manos Daskalakis left the house or threatened divorce, a child would fall ill and then die, bringing the couple back together again. Perhaps she believed that every major difficulty having to do with the only thing they had in common with each other, namely the children, brought a fleeting truce that she hoped would last forever.

The second scenario for the 33-year-old's motives has to do with her insatiable need to attract attention through the pity she evoked in others. A tragic and irreversible event such as an illness or the death of a child turned the eyes of all the people around her on her, with her possibly enjoying the attention as the protagonist of the dramatic events that she might in the process turn out to have masterfully devised and executed.

The third scenario, which is about why she did it, focuses on the case of Georgina. He may have been driven to the criminal act to take out the little girl who may have heard or seen something and was afraid of being found out. A typical example is the possibility that Georgina saw something to do with the death of her 7-month-old sister Iris and that is why almost three weeks later she suddenly falls ill and ends up at the Karamandaneio where she suffers her first heart attack.

After the arrest of Pispirigou for the homicide of Georgina, the preliminary examination for the deaths of the other two children continues. Reports indicate that within the week, there will be developments related to Malena's death exactly three years ago at the Children's Hospital. This is because the investigation by the Karakuki-Kalogria informal committee into the 3.5-year-old daughter's file is being completed. The forensic death report prepared by Christina Tsakonas stated that the child died of liver failure and pulmonary edema. At the same time, the toxicological tests carried out at the time were 'clean' since no traces of a strange substance, namely ketamine, were found. However, the slides with the children's tissues that are available may be sent to the Toxicology Laboratory of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki and put under the microscope of the scientific team of Professor Nikolaos Raikos, which is considered one of the leading in Europe. The statements of the forensic pathologist and president of the Hellenic Forensic Society Gregory Leon to THEMA on the cases of the two children are characteristic. "According to the copies of the forensic reports, there is no doubt that with the specific findings the phenomenon of suffocating death cannot be ruled out for both children. There are common elements in both children and the manner in which the suffocation occurred will be investigated by the competent authorities."

The cell

Police officers believe that Pispirigou's apology to the investigator will be of extreme interest for the development of the investigations. With the data so far, the 33-year-old will deny any connection with the murder of Georgina and will generally support everything she said in the various interviews she gave as from the beginning of the case she had made sure to have an open channel of communication with the media. To the point where he would talk daily on the phone, on Facebook messenger and on some occasions pick up the phone and call the media to make off the record interventions during broadcasts! One point that homicide analysts are focusing on is whether she will challenge in her apology to the investigating judge, as she did in the informal conversation she had with the police officers who went to Patras to catch her, the existence of ketamine and whether she will ask for a retest. As well as how she will justify the fact that the substance was administered to little Georgina during the time that only she was in the hospital room.

Of course, during the hours that Roula Pispirigou is on the 7th floor of the Security detention center, she is quite busy with her defense tactics and her image. She met with her lawyers for about an hour and a half at a time having an opinion on how to structure her apology memorandum. So far, she has been visited by her mother, her sister and her two legal defenders at the GADA headquarters. The two women, on their first visit, appeared in black sunglasses and hooded to avoid contact with the journalists who have "camped" outside the building on Alexandra Avenue, took her a suitcase with clothes, some snacks and bottled water. In fact, the next day, mother and daughter made a televised intervention on a midday show, complaining that the accused was brutally beaten and tortured into confessing. However, something that was refuted not only by the homicide police officers, the headquarters of the National Police and the coroner who was called to go immediately to examine her (ed: there are also photos in order not to question the fact that she has not suffered anything) but also by Pispirigou herself, raising questions about the reasons why her mother and sister made these false allegations.

As far as her detention is concerned, the 33-year-old is alone in a cell on the 7th floor of the GADA in the women's wing and is being discreetly supervised by two police officers. She has a stone bed and a toilet so that her physical integrity is not put at risk should she become suicidal. The police officers who have been in contact with her describe her as a nervous, frightened person who has not asked for anything in particular and is barely fed on the food that arrives in the cells from the police club. At the same time, she has access to a payphone to contact her family and lawyers. In one of her communications, Pispirigou spoke on a show making an odd conversation regarding a phone call she had with her husband on Friday morning. After referring to Manos Daskalakis' intention to file a civil suit on the excuse of being able to work, she said she asked for more support from her ex-husband and described the response she received from him. That he would not visit her or give her more support so that he and his father would not end up in jail. A cryptic statement that has certainly already been put under the microscope by the authorities. On Sunday morning and after the publication of an interview with Manos Daskalakis, he "struck again" with a public intervention in a TV station. From inside the detention room, she called and stated that "I will do everything to see what kind of mother the children had" to add referring to the intention she expressed to undergo a lie detection test "I will bring every technique there is to prove the truth and not like some people, some people who do crocodile tears to look "holy"", "photographing" her ex-husband after his statement that he would support the accusation against her.
