Restoration work is being accelerated at the monastery of Chrysorrogiatis founded in 1152.

The historic monastery is facing serious building problems with part of it in danger of collapse.[/B] Director General of the Ministry of Transport, Communications and Works Stavros Michael, who was at the monastery today, said that procedures would be speeded up.

Michael admitted that the monastery's building situation is worse than he expected, stressing that measures are urgent. He said they are awaiting the completion of the relevant study undertaken by private designers on behalf of the Paphos metropolis in cooperation with the TEPAK and subsequently the public works will take over the project. The study will be ready in a few months and by the end of the year the call for tenders is expected.

The Abbot of the monastery Pangratios explained that rain water is collected from the roofs of all the buildings in the inner courtyard and with a small concrete groove it was transported under the buildings to the outside.

This groove, however, was blocked and the moisture is causing problems to the foundations and masonry of the monastery. There are also problems on the roofs of the monastery buildings. As the Abbot said, all the roofs are leaking during the winter and the rescue work will have to be accelerated.

The Department of Antiquities and the Paphos metropolis will pay half of the cost, which is estimated to exceed one million euros.
