[B-4]The highest number of coronavirus cases in one day since the start of the pandemic was recorded in the UK on Wednesday, with 78,610 cases.[B-5][B-6]The previous negative record was recorded on 8 January 2021, with 68.053 cases.[B-7][B-8]On a rolling seven-day basis, COVID-19 cases are up 19.1%.[B-9][B-10]The Omicron variant plays a significant role in the increase in cases. Indicatively, the new variant accounts for 52% of cases in London. In other parts of the country for the time being Delta remains the predominant variant. Based on Tuesday's figures, a total of 5,346 cases of Omicron have been confirmed.[B-11][B-12]The number of deaths confirmed in the 24-hour period was 165. On a rolling seven-day basis they have decreased by 5%.[B-13][B-14]Hospital admissions in the last seven days have increased by 10% compared to the previous period. Currently 7,673 coronavirus carriers are hospitalized, of which 896 are intubated.[B-15][B-16]On the vaccination front, 656,711 third doses were administered on Tuesday alone, bringing the total number of booster doses given to 24.7 million, or 43% of citizens 12 years of age and older.[B-17]
