These days there is the highest hospitalization of children with coronavirus, as they have almost doubled compared to two weeks ago, as reported in yesterday's Cyprus Times report.
According to the Director of the Paediatric Clinic of the Archbishop Makarios III Hospital, Dr Abraham Ilias, about one in three children hospitalised at Makarios Hospital currently have coronavirus.
"Usually they are young children under five years old, although we have older children, but usually it is the young children who present with high fever, anorexia, malaise, some children may present with febrile convulsions, and they have to be hospitalized," Dr. Ilias said.
Dr Elias said hospitalisations of children with coronavirus have doubled from about five two weeks ago.
"The number has increased, we have the highest hospitalisation of children with coronavirus, and we are currently hospitalising 10 children," he said. Hospitalizations are hovering around eight to 11 children, he added. "Yesterday there were 11 children which was the highest number we had," he noted."
In response to a question about Omicron, he said that according to a sample identification they did, the Omicron mutation was detected in six of 21 samples and four involved infants.
Dr. Elias said children with coronavirus are only hospitalized when they have symptoms such as high fever, impaired general condition, or if they are infants who present with anorexia, dehydration, gastrointestinal distress, or older children with persistent fever or respiratory distress or chest pain.
