From central Patagonia to northern Argentina, record temperatures of up to 45 degrees Celsius
Cities and villages in Argentina and neighbouring countries are baking under the hot sun and temperatures are breaking one record after another as the region is swept by a historic heatwave.
"Almost all of Argentina and neighboring countries such as Uruguay, southern Brazil and Paraguay are experiencing the hottest days in history," said Cindy Fernandes, a meteorologist at the National Weather Service.
Many cities, from central Patagonia to northern Argentina, are recording record temperatures of up to 45 degrees Celsius.
The heat and prolonged drought are affecting grain crops but meteorologists hope that by next week the temperature will drop and the rains will begin, cooling plants and people.
"It's another hellish day," commented Elizabeth Basin as she waited for the bus in Buenos Aires. "It's been going on for a week now and the body is getting used to the heat."
Emmanuel Moreno, who sells soft drinks, said he was working in the heat but making sure to hydrate. "It's true that it's very hot, but when you're working you don't realize it. You realize at some point that you are thirsty and you have to drink water, a lot of water, because otherwise you cannot continue," he said."
