Elizabeth, 95, will celebrate her first Christmas in decades without her "mainstay", as she called Prince Philip
A religious ceremony in memory of Prince Philip, Queen Elizabeth's husband, will be held this spring at Westminster Abbey in the heart of the British capital, Buckingham Palace announced today, on the eve of the queen's first Christmas since the death of the Duke of Edinburgh.
"The Queen has agreed to arrange a ceremony to commemorate the life of Her Royal Highness, Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh, in the spring of 2022," the Palace said, without specifying the exact date.
Because of the pandemic, the funeral of Philip, who died on April 9 at the age of 99, was held in an intimate family circle, with only 30 people in attendance. The Queen appeared in a mask and members of the royal family kept their distance from each other.
Elizabeth, 95, will celebrate her first Christmas in decades without her "prop", as she called him. With a new wave of pandemic sweeping the country because of the Omicron variant, the queen will spend the holidays at Windsor Tower rather than at her residence in Sandringham, as usual. As a precautionary measure, she did not organise the traditional family gathering which would normally be attended by around 50 guests.
The heir to the throne Prince Charles and his wife Camilla will spend Christmas Day with her. Her daughter, Princess Anne, will not visit because she has been quarantined after her husband tested positive for Covid-19.
As every year, the Queen will address the people with a taped message.
