French President Emmanuel Macron had a one-hour-and-40-minute telephone conversation today with his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin to try to de-escalate tensions in the Russian-Ukrainian crisis, according to Elysee.

French President Emmanuel Macron today told his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin that a "sincere dialogue is not compatible with a (military) escalation" on the Ukrainian border, Elysee said, following a one-hour-and-40-minute phone call between the two leaders.

Macron and Putin "both expressed the will to continue the dialogue" through "channels in order to promote the implementation of the Minsk agreements" on Donbass and on "conditions of security and stability in Europe," the French presidency added.

The French president "also conveyed the concerns of his European partners and allies," the statement added.

The phone call, which began at 12.30 French time, preceded a communication expected to take place later today between US President Joe Biden and Vladimir Putin.

Elise is expected to provide information later on the conversation between Macron and Putin, who had already met for more than five hours on Monday at the Kremlin. Emmanuel Macron then went to Kiev on Tuesday for talks with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, then to Berlin.

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov gave no further details about that phone call.
