A cry of despair from inside the cells of Chania prison amid a health crisis. Submitting a request for release to the Heraklion Plenary Court, 49-year-old temporary prisoner L.N. reveals his suicidal tendencies, citing fear of contracting coronavirus. At the same time, he presents the symptoms of depression from which he allegedly suffers, together with his cocaine addiction.

The 20-year drug user puts forward his underlying illnesses and psychiatric expertise in order to request, through his defence lawyers, his release from prison.

He was remanded in custody four months ago on charges of possession and trafficking (300 grams of cocaine), participation in a criminal organisation and violation of the law on weapons. He claims that the drugs found by the police belonged to a person from his close family, while he claims that the weapon found was an heirloom.

Speaking of a nightmarish scene he is experiencing and under the terror of the pandemic, the prisoner claims to have underlying diseases, type II diabetes mellitus, obesity and heart problems, and refers to a "threefold" risk of death if he becomes ill.

Completing the grim picture, he is also seeking release because of his wife who, he claims, has cervical cancer and is 80% disabled. He claims to be the father of six children, a chronic cocaine user, and says he suffers from psychological problems.

The prisoner's lawyers note in the release application that he "meets the criteria for a diagnosis of cocaine addiction and needs to attend a rehabilitation programme in a specialised facility".

"He cannot voluntarily and independently eliminate the sixth month of use," the petition for the detainee further states.

"My dependence is physical, which manifests itself in the development of adverse physical symptoms and severe physical disorders," the prisoner claims for his part, referring to depressive tendencies and introverted conflicts.

"The continuation of my temporary detention will certainly cause me irreparable harm with the possibility of even losing my life in case of contracting coronavirus", words with which the prisoner attempts to open the window of his partial freedom.

Through her defence lawyers, she also asks for the imposition of any restrictive condition other than imprisonment.
