Serious measures are inevitable, the walls are under great threat, says a statement by the "presidency" on the collapse of part of the northern part of the Gwerini bastion, on which the "presidency" building complex is located.

As reported from the occupied territories, the "presidency" adds that according to the initial findings of experts due to the heavy rains this year, the increased humidity caused damage to the walls "and unfortunately caused this collapse."

It is reported that experts from the "antiquities and museums department" are conducting an on-site investigation[/B] and because of the danger of the demolished site and its connection to the adjacent busy park, the "municipality" of Nicosia was contacted and work was started in order to take the necessary security measures.

An assessment is being made, it is added, as to the measures to be taken to ensure that this unfortunate incident, which also caused damage to the trees and plants in the area, does not happen again.

It is noted that the plants and trees that have grown on the wall, combined with the dust that gets into it, has compromised the future of the walls and the cracks are growing every day as the roots of the plants grow into the stones and the wall. The weight of the buildings on the wall must also be added, it added, considering that immediate action is essential.

Meanwhile, the "Ministry of Tourism, Culture, Youth and Environment" has announced that it will call for tenders to repair the walls. It too believes that the collapse was caused by heavy rainfall.

Experts from the "department of antiquities and museums" and the "municipality" of Nicosia, it added, visited the site today and the necessary measures have been taken. A programme to repair the walls will be carried out and then tenders will be invited, the statement said. The aim is to start restoration work by drying the soil in the area in question, it added.
