Police recruitment regulations under the microscope of the Parliament Following the cancellation of recruitment
The updated regulations concerning the recruitment of personnel through examinations in the Cyprus Police, were tabled for discussion today in the Legal Affairs Committee of the Parliament. Emphasis was placed on ensuring the transparency of the process, particularly following the recent annulment decision of the Administrative Court, for 2020 recruitments.
The Administrative Court decided to annul the recruitment of 100 police and firefighters, after 21 candidates appealed the examination. One of the reasons for the annulment was the fact that the psychometric tests were awarded to a private company, which is not considered a competent body according to the law in force so far.
The revised text of the regulations was presented to the Commission by the Police, on which a discussion was held in order to strengthen the gaps that were also identified during the hearing of the case in the Administrative Court.
As the Chairman of the Committee and DISY MP Nikos Tornaritis stated after the meeting, "we cannot continue to have promotions and appointments in the police force that leave out in society any question mark".
He said he called for additional regulations to come before the House "which will further strengthen the external good testimony of those organs of the Police who take decisions in relation to promotions." He added that many issues need to be discussed, whether in terms of postgraduate degrees or the necessary height and weight of those who want to serve the police force.
The Law Commission is awaiting the dispatch of new regulations, Tornaritis said, stressing that "we need to put those safeguards in place to address the loopholes that unfortunately exist even as we speak."
