Planes grounded due to Omicron More than 2,000 flights cancelled

Airlines[/B] around the world have been forced to cancel more than 2.000 flights[/B] - a quarter of them in the US - mainly due to the Omicron variant of the new coronavirus that is disrupting the Christmas and New Year holidays.

According to the website Flightaware, by 17.40 today (GMT), 2,116 flights had been cancelled. 499 of these were in the US and were international and domestic flights. On Thursday, a total of 2,231 flights were cancelled.

Many airlines cited the pandemic that has decimated their crews as the reason for the cancellations.

United Airlines was forced to cancel more than 170 flights today, 9% of those scheduled for today.

"The increase in Omicron cases across the country this week has had a direct impact on crews and those managing the operation" of the airline, United Airlines said, assuring that it is trying to find solutions to accommodate its passengers.

Delta Air Lines canceled 145 flights, citing both Omicron and adverse weather conditions. "Crews exhausted all their options and resources" to come to this decision, he said.

At Alaska Airlines, more than 10 flights were canceled because crews may have been exposed to the new coronavirus and were forced into quarantine.

The American Automobile Association estimates that more than 109 million Americans (+34% compared to last year) were expected to travel this year for the holidays by air, train or car. But most of that travel was planned before the Omicron variant appeared, which is spreading rapidly and has forced many people into quarantine even if they are not showing symptoms.
