"We are already starting to produce some quantities," said Pfizer CEO
Pfizer CEO Albert Bourla made a hopeful statement amid a sweeping onslaught of the Omicron mutation that has caused a "tsunami" of cases around the world. "In March, Pfizer will have a vaccine ready for the highly transmissible variant," Bourla told US network CNBC.
"We are already starting to produce some of these quantities," the Pfizer CEO pointed out.
Bourla added that the vaccine will also target other circulating variants. He clarified that it is not yet clear whether or not a vaccine is needed for Omicron or how it will be used, but Pfizer will have some doses ready as some countries want it ready as soon as possible.
"The hope is that we will get something that will have much, much better protection, particularly against infections, because the protection against hospitalizations and serious illness is pretty good right now, with the current vaccines, as long as you've had, say, the third dose," Burla said.
The Pfizer chief assured, earlier, that the vaccine for Omicron will be available for mass production this year.
Asked about the possibility of a new mutation, Albert Burla noted that few people believe there will not be a new variant in the future.
