Omicron spreads in Cyprus 63 new cases of the variant
In the context of the strict control carried out in the Republic of Cyprus in the light of the new Omicron mutation, the Ministry of Health informs that following the sequencing of 192 positive case samples with collection dates from 11 December 2021 to 19 December 2021, conducted in collaboration between the Ministry of Health and NIPD and following data analysis by the Laboratory of Molecular Virology of the University of Cyprus, 59 positive samples with the Omicron variant were identified.
In addition, another 4 samples with airport sequencing were confirmed as Omicron by the Cyprus Institute of Neurology and Genetics.
- Of the 192 samples, 80 were collected at airports, 9 samples were collected from residents at the Eden Rehabilitation Centre and 103 samples were collected from the community.
[*]Specifically, 34 cases of the Omicron variant (B.1.1.529) involved samples collected at the airports, 7 from Eden and 22 from the community.
