The Omicron mutation, already identified in 89 countries, is highly prevalent and the number of cases doubles every 1.5-3 days in areas where there is community transmission, the World Health Organization (WHO) has announced.
t№6 Data show that Omicron is spreading rapidly in countries with high levels of population immunity. It is not clear, however, whether this is due to the virus' ability to evade immunity, its inherently increased infectivity or a combination of the two.t№8 "There is still limited evidence on the clinical severity of Omicron," the WHO stresses. "More data are needed to understand its severity and how it is affected by vaccination and pre-existing immunity."
t№10 At the same time, there are still limited data available and no peer-reviewed data on the efficacy or resistance of the vaccine to date.t№12 The WHO warns that with cases increasing so rapidly, hospitals will again come under great pressure in some areas. Already hospitalisations in the UK and South Africa continue to rise and it is likely that many health systems in many countries will quickly come under great pressure.
