Omicron is no less serious than Delta, new research shows -Imperial College London has completed a new study of 31.329 patients who became ill with one of the two mutations With the booster dose, vaccine efficacy increased by 55% to 80%
Infections caused by the Omicron variant do not appear to be less severe than those caused by the Delta mutation, early data from the UK show.
Researchers at Imperial College London compared 11,329 people with confirmed or probable Omicron infection with nearly 200,000 people infected with other variants. So far, according to a report issued before it was evaluated and updated Monday, the researchers "see no evidence that Omicron has lower severity than Delta" by either the percentage of positive people reporting symptoms or by the percentage of cases seeking hospital care after infection.
Indicative of the speed at which Omicron is spreading is the graphic below, prepared by the Sager Institute in England.
The booster dose increases the vaccine's effectiveness
At the same time, vaccines available in the UK have an effectiveness of 0% to 20% after two doses. However, the percentage of effectiveness increases from 55% to 80% after the booster dose.
The same study shows that after taking individual risk factors into account, the chances of re-infection with Omicron are 5.4 times higher than with Delta.
A study of healthcare workers in the pre-Omicron era showed that Sars-CoV-2 infection provided 85% protection against a second infection within 6 months. In Omicron, protection is as low as 19%.
