Texas state health officials reported the first death of a patient infected with the Omicron variant of the new coronavirus due to complications of COVID-19, the ABC News television network reported.

This is believed to be the first death due to this variant of SARS-CoV-2 in the United States, Harris County officials noted, the television network added.

The victim was in his 50s, unvaccinated for COVID-19, with underlying medical conditions.

Earlier, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the nation's main federal public health agency, announced that Omicron accounted for over 73% of SARS-CoV-2 infections in the week ending December 18, meaning it is now the dominant one.
