Interior Minister Nikos Nouris is travelling to Lille, France, today to participate in the Informal Council on Internal Affairs and Migration of the EU, organised by the French Presidency from 2 to 4 February.

This evening the Minister will attend a working dinner organised by the Presidency of the Council of the EU in the presence of the French President Emmanuel Macron, during which issues relating to the Schengen area, among others, will be discussed.

On the Council's agenda is the advancement of negotiations on the new European Pact on Immigration and Asylum, with the French presidency taking initiatives and tabling an informal document aimed at removing the obstacles and reservations that prevent an agreement from being reached.

In the margins of the Council, the Interior Minister will meet with the European Commissioner for Home Affairs, Ylva Johansson, to discuss issues related to the forthcoming signing of a Memorandum of Understanding on Migration between the Republic of Cyprus and the European Union, while meetings are also scheduled with the Austrian and Danish Interior Ministers.

In the margins of the Summit, a technical team consisting of representatives of the Ministry of Interior and the Cyprus Police will meet with a French team to discuss ways to support Cyprus in matters of returns to sub-Saharan African countries.

The Minister returns to Cyprus on Friday evening.
