[B-4]Eric Adams, the newly elected mayor of New York City, will appoint a woman to the position of the city's police chief for the first time in its 176-year history, local media reported yesterday, Tuesday.[B-5][B-6]Adams, who is himself a former New York City police chief, will introduce Kitchad Seawell to citizens during a press conference today in Queens, according to a report in the New York Daily News.[B-7][B-8]"Kitsad Siewell is a proven crime fighter with the experience and emotional intelligence to provide both the safety New Yorkers need and the justice they deserve," Adams said in a statement released by the newspaper.[B-9][B-10]The New York Times wrote that Sewell is a 23-year veteran of the Nassau County Police Department in New York City, where she served as chief.[B-11][B-12]She will become the third New York City police chief of African-American descent.[B-13][B-14]The current NYPD chief, Dermot Shea, was appointed in 2019 by then-Mayor Bill de Blasio.[B-15][B-16]"We welcome Chief Sewell to the second toughest police post in America.
