The ships that have already entered the Mediterranean are the cruiser Marshal Ustinov, the frigate Admiral Kasatonov and the destroyer Vice-Admiral Kulakov
A group of ships of the Northern Fleet of the Russian Navy entered the Mediterranean Sea via Gibraltar for naval military exercises, Russian news agency Interfax reported today, citing a statement from the fleet.
Russian military moves are under close scrutiny as a build-up of Russian military forces near Ukraine and an exchange of inflammatory statements have caused turmoil in the West, sparking fears of an imminent war. Moscow categorically denies any plans to invade Ukraine.
Russia announced last month that its navy would hold a series of training exercises with all its fleets this month and next, from the Pacific to the Atlantic, in the latest show of force in a surge of military activity amid a confrontation with the West.
Interfax reported that the ships entering the Mediterranean were the cruiser Marshal Ustinov, the frigate Admiral Kasatonov and the destroyer Vice-Admiral Kulakov.
These will later join the exercises with the Russian Black Sea and Pacific fleets.
