"We are accelerating our accession to the EU"

A new video to the Ukrainian nation was posted on social media by the country's president, Volodymyr Zelensky, claiming that the Russian army has suffered the biggest losses in decades.

He noted that 31 Russian tactical battalion groups have now been rendered incapable of fighting.

At the same time, he demanded the immediate release of the mayor of Melitopol who has reportedly been kidnapped by Russian forces, saying he has discussed this with French and German leaders.

Zelensky stressed that Ukraine is working with the European Commission to speed up its EU accession.

As for the evacuation of civilians, he stressed that Ukraine is observing a ceasefire along key humanitarian routes from besieged Mariupol and called on Russia to do the same.
